Why we teach supply chains with dice, not slides

Hand a team a stack of slides about the bullwhip effect and they will nod along. Hand them a few dice and some coins, ask them to run a small supply chain for twenty rounds, and something different happens. Orders swing wildly. Inventory piles up in the wrong places. People start blaming the customer, then the supplier, then each other. By the end, nobody needs the theory explained. They have lived it.
That is the whole idea behind how we train.
The bullwhip effect, felt not described
The Beer Game has been used for decades because it works. A small change in customer demand ripples upstream and grows at every stage, until factories swing between famine and flood. You can describe that in a sentence. But the lesson only sticks when a participant realizes that their own reasonable-looking decisions created the chaos.

Why simulations beat slides
Two reasons. First, simulations compress time. A decision that would play out over months in a real fab plays out in minutes on the table, so people see cause and effect directly. Second, they are safe. You can make an expensive mistake, understand it, and try again, without a real customer paying for it.
This is not a gimmick. It comes straight from the discipline of System Dynamics and discrete-event simulation, which is how we model these systems in the first place. The game is just the model, made playable.
From the table to the job
The point of a game is what happens after it. Once a team has felt the bullwhip, conversations about forecast accuracy, safety stock and planning maturity land differently. The abstract becomes personal, and personal becomes actionable.
